WorksWorks: owners say TN43x toner resets with a gear, not a chip
Owners have used compatible TN433 and TN436 toner in the HL-L8360CDW for years, and several say its cartridges reset with a mechanical gear rather than a chip, so the printer has nothing to check. We found no report of a firmware update rejecting toner on this model. Brother still recommends genuine toner and won't cover damage from third-party supplies.
What to do now
- If a new cartridge (genuine or compatible) still shows 'Replace Toner', Brother says to check you replaced the toner and not the drum, use a brand-new cartridge rather than a partly used one, reseat it until it locks, and clean the corona wire.[10]
- A toner seller's guide for this model says a compatible cartridge that isn't recognized often still has protective tape or seals on it, and suggests removing them, reseating, and then a Machine Reset from the printer's settings menu.[11]Seller's advice, not Brother's. A reset clears settings.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- Brother lists the HL-L8360CDW and HL-L8360CDWT among the printers that take TN433 high-yield toner (about 4,500 black pages per cartridge).[2][3]
- Owners on Hacker News (Nov 2023) and r/hardware (Mar 2025) say TN43x cartridges carry a physical reset gear instead of a chip, so the HL-L8360CDW cannot tell genuine from compatible toner. One chose this model for that reason. These are owner accounts, not a lab test.[5][6]
- An Australian business owner on Whirlpool forums (Jul 2022) said he had run third-party toner in his HL-L8360CDW after the starter cartridges ran out with no issues.[7]
- Brother's support FAQ for this model recommends genuine toner, says some non-genuine supplies may hurt print quality or cause malfunctions, and says the limited warranty does not cover problems caused by third-party drums, toner cartridges or toner.[4]
- In March 2025 Brother told Ars Technica its firmware updates do not block third-party supplies. The reports that started that row involved other Brother models.[8]
Brother account and subscriptions
- Brother's product page lists no account or subscription needed to print. Cloud features such as Brother Cloud Apps need an internet connection, but genuine toner is sold at retail.[1]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- Brother's US download page for the HL-L8360CDW offers a Firmware Update Tool (version 1.90/1.33, released Oct 22, 2026) that pulls firmware from Brother's server. It lists no older firmware to roll back to.[9]
- Whirlpool forum members advised turning off automatic firmware updates on this printer. One said he didn't know whether later firmware breaks anything but saw no reason to risk it.[7]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- If a new cartridge (genuine or compatible) still shows 'Replace Toner', Brother says to check you replaced the toner and not the drum, use a brand-new cartridge rather than a partly used one, reseat it until it locks, and clean the corona wire.[10]
- A toner seller's guide for this model says a compatible cartridge that isn't recognized often still has protective tape or seals on it, and suggests removing them, reseating, and then a Machine Reset from the printer's settings menu.[11] Seller's advice, not Brother's. A reset clears settings.
What does not reliably work
- Rolling back firmware: Brother's download page offers only its update tool, not older firmware files.[9]
- Reusing a partly used cartridge from another machine: Brother says the printer can't track toner correctly and may keep showing 'Replace Toner'.[10]

What we could not verify
- Brother's own description of how TN43x cartridges are detected (the reset-gear explanation comes from owners, not Brother).
- What the Oct 22, 2026 firmware changes. Brother publishes no release notes on the download page.
- Whether there is an on-printer switch to turn off automatic firmware updates on US units.
- Brother's own confirmation of every model that takes TN436 on this page; we confirmed TN433 and the 6,500-page super high-yield option.
