HP firmware updates that blocked third-party cartridges
Known firmware versions that stopped non-HP-chip ink or toner from working, with dates and sources. "User-reported" means one or more owners say so but no press or maker source confirms it. "Unknown" means we list the version for reference but have no evidence it blocks anything.
HP calls this "dynamic security". HP's own wording: cartridges with a non-HP chip "may function for a period of time, but then cease to function", and changes arrive through online firmware updates (HP PDF).
