Third-party status
BlockedBlocked after firmware 2606/2607
Third-party HP 962 cartridges with non-HP chips are blocked once the 9025e takes HP's March 2026 firmware. Cartridges that reuse a genuine HP chip are the route HP says is allowed.
What to do now
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[3]Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Set firmware updates to not install automatically. HP's OfficeJet Pro 9010 series guide gives the path: Setup, Printer Maintenance, Update the Printer, Printer Update Options, then Alert When Available or Do Not Check.[5]Path is from HP's 9010 series guide; we have not checked the 9025e's own guide. It does not undo a block that already happened.
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 962 / 962XL. Always accepted by the printer. Compare prices across stores before you buy.
- Remanufactured 962 with a reused HP chip. The one non-HP option HP says it allows. Check the listing says the chip is reused HP.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- Int'l ITC, a remanufacturers' trade group, names the 9025 and 9025e in the HP 962 family hit by firmware updates 2606 and 2607 in March 2026.[1][2]
- HP's own policy: cartridges using a non-HP chip may work for a while, then stop after a firmware update. Cartridges that reuse an original HP chip are not affected.[3]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The 9025e is an HP+ eligible printer (HP marks these with an 'e'). HP says you can skip HP+ during setup.[4]
- If you turn HP+ on, it needs an HP account, an internet connection and Original HP ink for the life of the printer, and it stays on.[4]
- Instant Ink is optional. HP says Instant Ink printers must accept automatic firmware updates.[3]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- Firmware 2606 and 2607 (March 2026). Our sources name both numbers for the 962 family and do not say which one went to the 9025e.[1]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[3] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Set firmware updates to not install automatically. HP's OfficeJet Pro 9010 series guide gives the path: Setup, Printer Maintenance, Update the Printer, Printer Update Options, then Alert When Available or Do Not Check.[5] Path is from HP's 9010 series guide; we have not checked the 9025e's own guide. It does not undo a block that already happened.
What does not reliably work
- Switching HP+ off after turning it on. HP says HP+ stays enabled for the life of the printer once activated.[4]

What we could not verify
- Which of 2606 or 2607 is the 9025e's update.
- Whether the 9025e's own user guide uses the same update menu path as the 9010 series guide.
- Any dated owner report specific to the 9025e.
