On many HP inkjets the setting is under Setup, Printer Maintenance, Update the Printer, Printer Update Options. On ENVY 6000 series printers HP says to turn off Web Services first. This keeps a working setup from changing. It does not undo a block that already happened.

Why it matters
- HP says cartridges with a non-HP chip may work for a while, then stop, and that these changes arrive through online firmware updates.[1]
- HP says Instant Ink printers must accept automatic updates, so these settings are for printers not on Instant Ink.[1]
OfficeJet Pro 9010 and 8020 series
- HP's 9010 series guide: on the control panel open the Dashboard, touch Setup, Printer Maintenance, Update the Printer, Printer Update Options, then choose Install Automatically, Alert When Available or Do Not Check. Auto Update is on by default.[2]
- HP's 8020 series guide gives the same path and the same three choices.[3]
- Both guides also offer a manual check in the printer's web page (EWS): Tools tab, Printer Updates, Firmware Updates.[2][3] Covers 9010, 9015, 9015e, 9018 and similar 9010 series models, and 8020 series models such as the 8025. Menus on 9020 series models were not checked.
OfficeJet Pro 7740 (and 7720/7730 class)
- HP's 7740 guide uses the same control-panel path, ending in Printer Update Options, Do Not Check. If the option shows as Feature Locked, the guide says to turn off Web Services first.[4] We read a third-party copy of HP's manual. The 7720 and 7730 share the series but were not checked separately.
ENVY 6000 series (6032, 6055, 6000e models)
- HP's ENVY 6000 series guide says the printer checks for updates automatically when Web Services is on, and that to turn auto-updates off you turn off Web Services first.[5]
- To remove Web Services, the guide says: open the EWS, Web Services tab, Remove Web Services, then Yes.[5] Removing Web Services also turns off features that use it, such as printing by email. HP+ printers need to stay online, so this is for non-HP+ setups.
DeskJet 2700e series (2755e)
- HP's 2700e guide says the printer checks for updates automatically when it is on a network with Web Services enabled, and describes a manual check in the EWS. It documents no switch to turn updates off.[6]
- The same guide says HP+ printers must remain connected to the internet.[6]
LaserJet Pro 4001 and MFP 4101 (not HP-verified)
- A toner seller's guide describes turning off automatic updates for these lasers from the printer's web page (EWS).[7] Seller guide, not HP. We have not checked it against an HP manual.
What this does not do
- HP says blocks arrive through updates, so stopping updates can only protect a setup that works now. It does not undo an update already installed.[1]
- HP+ printers need an internet connection and Original HP ink for life, so update settings do not open them to third-party ink.[8]
What we could not verify
- Update menus on the OfficeJet Pro 9020 series, 9120 series, 8120 series and other models not listed (we found no HP-hosted guide we could read).
- Whether HP honors 'Do Not Check' for every security update.
- The LaserJet 4001/4101 steps, which come from a seller.
