Third-party status
UnknownHP+ model: Original HP toner only by design; no firmware number confirmed
No, not in normal use. The M110we is an HP+ printer, and HP says it needs Original HP toner for its whole life. We found no named firmware block, so the status stays Unknown.
What to do now
- Remanufactured or refilled cartridges that carry a reused HP chip. HP's datasheet says a reused HP chip lets these cartridges work.[2]Ask the seller whether the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Moving the chip from the original HP toner into an aftermarket cartridge. One r/printers owner said in September 2026 that this worked on their M110we with 142A toner.[5]Single owner report. The chip is glued in, toner levels may be wrong, and a future update could stop it.
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 141A / 142A. Always accepted. HP lists about 950 pages per cartridge.
- Remanufactured 141A with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP.
- Account required
- Yes
- Cartridges
- HP 141A toner (W1410A) in the US; HP 142A (W1420A) in Europe and other regions
- Blocking firmware

Also applies to: LaserJet M110w, the non-HP+ version, uses the same toner family but is not bound by HP+ rules.
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's store says the M110we works only with HP toner and needs an HP account and an internet connection.[1]
- HP's datasheet says the printer uses dynamic security to block cartridges with a non-HP chip, and that firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before. Cartridges with a new or reused HP chip are allowed.[2]
- On the HP Support Community in September 2024, an owner said the M110we rejected a non-original toner cartridge, and a community expert replied that the HP+ model needs Original HP toner while the M110w (no 'e') can use any toner.[3]
- On r/printers in February 2026, an owner whose third-party toner was rejected was told by other users that no third-party cartridge will work on the 'e' model.[4]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- HP says the M110we requires an HP account, an internet connection and Original HP toner for the life of the printer.[1][2]
- HP's HP+ FAQ explains the HP+ rules that come with 'e' models.[6]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no source naming an M110we firmware version that blocks toner. HP's datasheet only says periodic updates keep the block working.[2]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Remanufactured or refilled cartridges that carry a reused HP chip. HP's datasheet says a reused HP chip lets these cartridges work.[2] Ask the seller whether the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Moving the chip from the original HP toner into an aftermarket cartridge. One r/printers owner said in September 2026 that this worked on their M110we with 142A toner.[5] Single owner report. The chip is glued in, toner levels may be wrong, and a future update could stop it.
What does not reliably work
- Turning off 'Cartridge Protection' in the printer's web settings. An HP Support Community expert explains that this does not switch off dynamic security.[7]

What we could not verify
- Which M110we firmware, if any, first blocked third-party toner.
- Whether moving the original HP chip keeps working on current firmware (one owner report only).
- HP's US store now lists the M110we as discontinued; we could not confirm when.
