UnknownNon-HP chips blocked by design; no firmware number confirmed
HP's own store page says the ENVY 6455e blocks cartridges with modified or non-HP chips, and owners report compatible HP 67XL cartridges being refused. Refills that reuse an original HP chip are the only non-HP option HP allows, and only if HP+ was never turned on.
What to do now
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 67 / 67XL. Always accepted unless HP+ ties the printer to Instant Ink. HP lists 67 and 67XL in black and tri-color for this model. HP has discontinued the printer itself, but still sells the supplies. Compare prices across stores.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's US store page says the 6455e is a dynamic security printer: it only works with cartridges that have new or reused HP circuitry, blocks modified or non-HP circuitry, and periodic firmware updates will block cartridges that previously worked.[1][2]
- The same HP page says reused HP circuitry allows reused, remanufactured and refilled cartridges, so a refill built on a genuine HP 67 shell and chip is the non-HP option HP itself describes.[1]
- A 6455e owner posted on HP's community on October 31, 2023 that generic HP 67XL cartridges from Amazon gave an error even after cleaning and reinstalling. The reply quoted HP's datasheet on dynamic security and said they were not likely to work.[3]
- Another 6455e owner reported on August 7, 2024 that compatible non-HP cartridges were refused with a message to use HP cartridges, even though the printer still printed its status report, and turning off cartridge protection did not help.[4]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The 6455e is HP+ enabled, and HP+ is chosen at setup. HP says HP+ requires an HP account, an ongoing internet connection and exclusive use of Original HP ink for the life of the printer.[1]
- An HP employee told a 6455e owner on January 23, 2026 that once HP+ is enabled it cannot be removed, and that the printer then rejected store-bought genuine HP 67XL cartridges and asked for Instant Ink cartridges. That owner said store cartridges had worked before.[5]
- HP says enrolling a printer in Instant Ink or using HP ePrint requires accepting automatic online firmware updates.[2]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no dated firmware number tied to a new cartridge lockout on the ENVY 6455e. HP's statement is general: any periodic update can block cartridges that work today.[1][2]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use refilled or remanufactured HP 67 cartridges that keep the original HP chip. HP says reused HP circuitry is allowed.[1][2] Ask the seller whether the chip is a reused HP chip; most 'compatible' HP 67 cartridges use a cloned chip. Does not apply if HP+ is on.
What does not reliably work
- Turning off cartridge protection did not get compatible cartridges accepted for the August 2024 owner. Cartridge protection only ties cartridges to one printer.[4]
- Cleaning contacts and reinstalling did not fix the generic 67XL error in the October 2023 report.[3]

What we could not verify
- Which firmware version, if any, started blocking cartridges that previously worked on the 6455e.
- Whether HP+ really limits the 6455e to Instant Ink cartridges only. An HP employee said so in January 2026, but HP's store page only says HP+ needs Original HP ink, which would include store-bought HP 67.
- Any dated owner report of a cloned-chip HP 67 cartridge working on current 6455e firmware.
- Whether automatic updates can be turned off on the 6455e. We found no 6455e-specific HP instructions, and HP community replies on other models conflict on this.
- Whether a firmware downgrade is possible on the 6455e.
