Third-party status
UnknownHP+ model: Original HP toner only by design; no firmware number confirmed
No, not in normal use. The M140we is an HP+ printer, and HP says it needs Original HP toner for its whole life. We found no named firmware block, so the status stays Unknown.
What to do now
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 142A. Always accepted. HP lists about 950 pages per cartridge.
- Remanufactured 142A with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP.
- Account required
- Yes
- Cartridges
- HP 142A toner (W1420A) per HP's support specs; HP's datasheet also lists HP 141A (W1410A) and HP 150A (W1500A) for some regions
- Blocking firmware
- None reported
- Last checked
Also applies to: LaserJet MFP M140w, the non-HP+ version, is not bound by HP+ rules. The M141w uses HP 150A toner.
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's datasheet says the M140we is an HP+ printer that requires an HP account, an internet connection and exclusive use of Original HP toner for the life of the printer.[1]
- The same datasheet says the printer uses dynamic security to block cartridges with a non-HP chip, and that periodic firmware updates will block cartridges that worked before. Cartridges with a new or reused HP chip are allowed.[1]
- At least one aftermarket seller (True Image) says its compatible 141A/141X toner does not work with HP+ 'e' models such as the M140we.[4]
- An HP Support Community expert said the 'e' model limits you to HP cartridges and that people who want third-party toner should buy the non-e version.[3]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- HP says the M140we requires an HP account and an internet connection, and the HP+ FAQ explains the rules that come with 'e' models.[1][6]
- In an HP Support Community thread, an HP volunteer said HP+ cannot be disabled once it is activated.[7]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no source naming an M140we firmware version that blocks third-party toner. HP's datasheet only says periodic updates keep the block working.[1]
- In April 2025 an M140we owner on the HP Support Community said that after a firmware update installed itself, the printer showed 'Black Cartridge supply problem' and rejected a genuine HP cartridge that was about 70% full. HP's replies offered only reseating and power-cycle steps.[5]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Remanufactured or refilled cartridges that carry a reused original HP chip. HP's datasheet and its dynamic security statement both say reused HP chips are not blocked.[1][8] Ask the seller in writing whether the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
What does not reliably work
- New-build compatible toner with its own (non-HP) chip. HP says these may work for a while and then stop after a firmware update, and HP+ models are meant to reject them.[1][8]

What we could not verify
- Which M140we firmware, if any, first blocked third-party toner.
- Which toner number (141A, 142A or 150A) applies to M140we units sold in the US; HP's pages differ by region.
- Whether the April 2025 genuine-cartridge rejection was caused by the firmware update or by a faulty cartridge (single owner report, unresolved in the thread).
