Third-party status
UnknownNon-HP chips blocked by design; no firmware number confirmed
HP's own datasheet says the M209dw blocks non-HP-chip toner by design, and the HP+ M209dwe takes Original HP toner only. No named firmware block, so the status is Unknown.
What to do now
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[1]Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Moving the original HP chip to a compatible cartridge, as one Reddit owner suggests.[3]Owner tip. Toner level reporting may be lost.
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 134A / 134X. Always accepted. HP lists about 1,100 pages (134A) and 2,400 pages (134X).
- Remanufactured 134A with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP.
- Account required
- Only with HP+
- Cartridges
- HP 134A / 134X toner (135A / 135X in Europe)
- Blocking firmware
- None reported
- Last checked
Also applies to: LaserJet M209dwe, the HP+ version of the same printer.
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's M209dw datasheet carries HP's dynamic security notice: cartridges with non-HP chips may not work, and future updates can stop ones that work today.[1]
- HP's store says the HP+ M209dwe works only with Original HP toner.[2]
- On r/printers in December 2023, owners said the M209dwe has HP+ and one suggested moving an original HP chip onto a compatible cartridge.[3]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The M209dwe is an HP+ printer: HP account, internet and Original HP toner are required.[2]
- HP says HP+ stays on for the life of the printer once activated.[4]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no source naming an M209 firmware version that blocks toner.[1]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[1] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Moving the original HP chip to a compatible cartridge, as one Reddit owner suggests.[3] Owner tip. Toner level reporting may be lost.
What does not reliably work
- Firmware downgrade on the M209dwe: Reddit replies say it does not help because HP+ requires Original HP toner.[3]

What we could not verify
- Which M209 firmware, if any, has blocked third-party toner.
- Whether chip transfer still works on current firmware.
- Whether the non-HP+ M209dw behaves differently from the M209dwe in practice.
