UnknownNon-HP chip block reported; no firmware number confirmed
An M283fdw owner reported toner 'blocked for containing a non-HP chip' in November 2024, and said an older firmware fixed it. No source names the firmware, so the status is Unknown.
What to do now
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[2]Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Stop automatic updates so a setup that works now is not changed.[2]We have not verified the M283fdw's menu path.
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 206A / 206X. Always accepted.
- Remanufactured 206A with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- In November 2024 an M283fdw owner said the printer showed cartridges blocked for containing a non-HP chip.[1]
- Two days later the same owner said installing older firmware made the cartridges work again.[1]
- HP's policy: non-HP chips may work for a while, then stop after an update. Reused HP chips are not affected.[2]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The M283fdw is not an HP+ printer. HP lists HP+ only for 'e' models.[3]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- The owner report does not name the blocking or the working firmware version.[1]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[2] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Stop automatic updates so a setup that works now is not changed.[2] We have not verified the M283fdw's menu path.
What does not reliably work
- Firmware downgrades: one owner says it worked and a seller offers files, but HP does not support downgrades and we never call one safe.[1][4]
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 206A / 206X. Always accepted. Shop
- Remanufactured 206A with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP. Shop

What we could not verify
- The firmware version behind the November 2024 block.
- Whether a downgrade still works on current M283fdw firmware.
