Third-party status
UnknownNon-HP chips blocked by design; no firmware number confirmed
HP says the 4155e blocks non-HP circuitry by design. A February 2026 owner still saw 'non-HP circuitry detected' with cartridge protection off. No named firmware block, so the status is Unknown.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's store page says the 4155e is a dynamic security printer: cartridges without HP circuitry may not work, now or after updates.[1]
- In February 2026 an owner said the printer kept reporting non-HP circuitry even with cartridge protection turned off. HP's reply offered only general reset steps.[2]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- HP+ is optional at setup. With HP+ on, the printer needs an HP account, internet and Original HP ink for life.[3]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no source naming a 4155e firmware version that blocks cartridges.[4]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Skip HP+ at setup if you want any chance with non-HP cartridges.[3] HP+ cannot be undone later.
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[4] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
What does not reliably work
- Turning off HP Cartridge Protection did not clear the non-HP message for one owner.[2]
