Third-party status
UnknownNon-HP chip block reported; no firmware number confirmed
M404 owners report 'non-HP chip' errors with third-party toner, and one says genuine toner was flagged too. No source ties it to a named firmware, so the status is Unknown.
What to do now
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[4]Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- The seller's guide describes turning off Cartridge Policy (Setup, System Setup, Supply Settings) and the automatic printer update setting.[2]Seller guide, not HP. We have not verified these menus on current firmware.
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 58A / 58X. Always accepted.
- Remanufactured 58A with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP.
- Account required
- No
- Cartridges
- HP 58A / 58X toner (59A / 59X outside the US)
- Blocking firmware

Also applies to: LaserJet Pro M404n, M404dw, M405 and the MFP M428 models (same 58A/58X toner, per a seller's list).
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- In August 2024 an M404dn owner reported event code 10.00.46: cartridge containing a non-HP chip.[1]
- In October 2024 another poster said even a sealed genuine HP 59A was flagged on an M404n after a reset and firmware update.[1]
- CompAndSave, a seller, wrote in September 2024 that HP firmware updates can stop third-party 58A/58X toner on these models.[2]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The M404 is not an HP+ printer. HP lists HP+ only for 'e' models.[3]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- No source names the M404 version that started blocking. The seller said in September 2024 that 2149A was then the latest version.[2]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[4] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- The seller's guide describes turning off Cartridge Policy (Setup, System Setup, Supply Settings) and the automatic printer update setting.[2] Seller guide, not HP. We have not verified these menus on current firmware.
What does not reliably work
- Firmware downgrades: a seller offers older 58A-family files, but HP does not support downgrades and we have not tested any.[5]
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 58A / 58X. Always accepted. Shop
- Remanufactured 58A with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP. Shop

What we could not verify
- The firmware version that blocks third-party 58A/58X toner.
- Whether turning off Cartridge Policy still helps on current firmware.
- Why genuine toner was flagged in one report.
