Third-party status
UnknownNon-HP chips blocked by design; no firmware number confirmed
HP says the 9125e blocks non-HP-chip cartridges by design, and with HP+ on it takes Original HP ink only. Compatible 936 cartridges are new and unproven. No named firmware block yet.
What to do now
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 936 / 936e. Always accepted, including with HP+.
- Remanufactured 936 with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP. Supply is still thin.

Also applies to: OfficeJet Pro 9125 (non-'e' version without HP+). Other 9100 series models: check your cartridge number.
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's store page says the 9125e is a dynamic security printer: cartridges with a non-HP chip may not work, and updates can stop ones that work today. Reused HP chips are allowed.[1]
- Swift Ink, a seller, said in July 2026 (updated October 2026) that compatible 936 cartridges only have a chance in printers never enrolled in HP+ or Instant Ink, and results vary.[2]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- HP+ is offered at setup. With HP+ on, the printer needs an HP account, internet and Original HP ink for life.[1][3]
- HP says HP+ stays on once activated.[3]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no dated firmware number tied to a 9125e block. HP says any periodic update may change which cartridges work.[1]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Skip HP+ at setup if you want any chance with non-HP ink.[3][2] HP+ cannot be undone later.
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[4] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
What does not reliably work
- Turning HP+ off after it is on. HP says it is embedded for the life of the printer.[3]

What we could not verify
- Any owner report of a named firmware blocking 936 cartridges.
- Whether compatible 936 cartridges work at all on a 9125e without HP+.
- The 9125e's update menu path (we did not find it in an HP-hosted guide).
