Does third-party ink still work in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8025?
If non-HP 910 cartridges suddenly stopped working, the likely cause is HP firmware. The 8010 to 8035 family was named in HP's March 2026 lockout updates.
- Third-party status

Also applies to: OfficeJet Pro 8010, 8018, 8020, 8022, 8028, 8035 (same HP 910 family). For 8025e, see the HP+ notes.
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- Int'l ITC lists the OfficeJet Pro 8010, 8018, 8020, 8022, 8025, 8028 and 8035 among printers hit by HP's March 2026 firmware 2606/2607, which disabled remanufactured cartridges.[1][2]
- HP's policy: cartridges with a non-HP chip may work for a while, then stop after a firmware update. Cartridges that reuse an original HP chip are not affected.[3]
- An 8025 owner reported in November 2024 that cartridges from two different suppliers were both blocked. HP's printer only offered to hide the message, not bypass it.[4]
- YRTS, a cartridge maker, says its 910 cartridges work on firmware 2623A (June 26, 2026) but not on printers registered to HP+. That is a seller claim we have not confirmed.[5]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The plain 8025 is not an HP+ model, so no HP account is needed to print. HP+ is offered on 'e' models such as the 8025e.[6]
- On an 8025e with HP+ turned on, HP requires an HP account, internet and Original HP ink for the life of the printer.[6]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- HP firmware 2606 and 2607: March 2026
- Firmware 2606/2607 (March 2026). Our sources do not say which number the 8025 received.[1]
- 2623A (June 26, 2026) is the latest version a seller lists for the 8020e family. We have no report that it blocks new cartridges.[5]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip. HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[3] Confirm with the seller before buying.
- Turn off automatic firmware updates so working cartridges are not blocked by the next update. HP says lockouts arrive through online updates and points to the user guide for the setting.[3] Does not undo a block that already happened.
What does not reliably work
- Hiding the error message: the 8025 owner says HP's 'Hide' option does not let blocked cartridges print.[4]
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 910 / 910XL. Always accepted by the printer. Shop
- Remanufactured 910 with a reused HP chip. Ask the seller to confirm the chip is a reused HP chip, and check their return policy for firmware blocks. Shop

What we could not verify
- Which of 2606 or 2607 the 8025 received, and the exact release day.
- Seller claims that cartridges work on 2623A.
- The 8025's on-printer menu path to turn off updates.
