UnknownClone-chip ink blocked by design; no firmware number confirmed
HP says the ENVY 6032e blocks cartridges with cloned or non-HP chips, and owners report exactly that. Refilled or remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip are the one non-HP option HP says it allows, unless HP+ is turned on.
What to do now
- Use refilled or remanufactured HP 305 cartridges that keep the original HP chip. HP says these are unaffected by dynamic security.[2]Ask the seller directly whether the cartridge has an original HP chip. 'Compatible' cartridges usually use a cloned chip. This does not apply if HP+ is on.
- Stop automatic updates so a setup that works now is not changed. HP's ENVY 6000 user guide says the printer checks for updates automatically when Web Services is on, and that to turn auto-updates off you turn off Web Services first, from the printer's embedded web server (type its IP address into a browser).[5][6]This protects cartridges that work now. It does not undo a block that already happened, and Instant Ink needs updates left on.
What to buy instead

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's own product page says the ENVY 6032e is a dynamic security printer: it blocks cartridges using modified or non-HP circuitry, and periodic firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before.[1][2]
- The same HP pages say cartridges that keep a new or reused original HP chip are unaffected, so refilled and remanufactured cartridges built on genuine HP shells can work.[1][2]
- An ENVY 6032 owner on r/printers reported in September 2026 that the printer was blocking third-party cartridges even after turning off cartridge protection and cancelling Instant Ink. An HP support account replied that third-party cartridges 'may stop working after printer updates'.[4]
- HP community experts tell ENVY 6000 owners there is no supported way to bypass the security, and to ask the ink seller whether the cartridge carries an HP chip.[7]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The 6032e is an HP+ enabled printer, and HP+ is chosen at setup. If you turn it on, HP says it needs an HP account, an ongoing internet connection and Original HP ink for the life of the printer.[1]
- HP's troubleshooting page says HP+ printers require Original HP cartridges, so no chip type gets around that once HP+ is on.[8]
- HP says enrolling in programs such as Instant Ink, or using HP ePrint, requires the printer to accept automatic online firmware updates.[2]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no dated firmware number tied to a new lockout on the ENVY 6000 series. HP's general statement is that any periodic update can block cartridges that work today.[1][2]
- HP says a firmware downgrade is not possible on the ENVY 6032e (HP Support Community reply, November 30, 2025).[3]

Workarounds that sources back up
- Use refilled or remanufactured HP 305 cartridges that keep the original HP chip. HP says these are unaffected by dynamic security.[2] Ask the seller directly whether the cartridge has an original HP chip. 'Compatible' cartridges usually use a cloned chip. This does not apply if HP+ is on.
- Stop automatic updates so a setup that works now is not changed. HP's ENVY 6000 user guide says the printer checks for updates automatically when Web Services is on, and that to turn auto-updates off you turn off Web Services first, from the printer's embedded web server (type its IP address into a browser).[5][6] This protects cartridges that work now. It does not undo a block that already happened, and Instant Ink needs updates left on.
What does not reliably work
- Rolling back firmware: HP says it is not possible on the ENVY 6032e.[3]
- Turning off cartridge protection or cancelling Instant Ink did not stop the block for the r/printers owner. Cartridge protection only ties cartridges to one printer.[4]

What we could not verify
- Whether the plain ENVY 6032 (no 'e') behaves differently from the 6032e. We only found HP's product page for the 6032e.
- Which firmware version, if any, started blocking cartridges that previously worked on this model.
- The cartridge number outside Europe. HP's 6032e page lists HP 305; other ENVY 6000 models sold in the US may use a different number.
- Seller claims that 'upgraded chip' compatible cartridges work on current firmware.
