Third-party status
BlockedBlocked after firmware 2602
Third-party HP 953 cartridges with non-HP chips are blocked once the 8710 takes HP's 2026 firmware. An owner reported a fresh block in August 2026. Reused-HP-chip cartridges are the safest non-HP choice.
What to do now
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[5]Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Stop automatic updates so a setup that works now is not changed. HP says lockout changes arrive through online updates.[5]We have not verified the 8710's exact menu path. Instant Ink needs updates left on.
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 953 / 953XL. Always accepted by the printer.
- Remanufactured 953 with a reused HP chip. Check the listing says the chip is reused HP.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- MnogoChernil, a Russian ink seller, lists the 8710 among 953/957 printers that got firmware 2602A in early 2026 and then rejected non-HP-chip cartridges.[1]
- Int'l ITC says firmware 2602A/2602B was released on January 29, 2026 across eleven models.[2]
- In August 2026 an 8710 owner said a recent update made the printer refuse a non-HP yellow cartridge.[3]
- HP's policy: non-HP chips may work for a while, then stop after an update. Cartridges reusing an HP chip are not affected.[5]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- The 8710 is not an HP+ printer. HP lists HP+ only for 'e' models such as the OfficeJet Pro 8000e and 9000e series.[4]
- Instant Ink is optional. HP says joining it means accepting automatic firmware updates.[5]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- 2602A (late January 2026), per the seller's list. The seller says the previous version was 2530 from August 2025.[1][2]
- An HP community expert said in August 2026 that another firmware update went out in June 2026 and quoted its notes: dynamic security is not enabled on printers made before December 1, 2016. No version number was given.[3]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[5] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
- Stop automatic updates so a setup that works now is not changed. HP says lockout changes arrive through online updates.[5] We have not verified the 8710's exact menu path. Instant Ink needs updates left on.
What does not reliably work
- Rolling back firmware: the HP community expert said downgrades rarely work and HP does not offer older files. The seller says rollback is possible but not guaranteed.[3][1]
What to buy instead

What we could not verify
- Whether the 8710 got 2602A, 2602B or both (sources give the family, not the exact build).
- The version number of the June 2026 update mentioned in the HP community.
- Whether printers built before December 1, 2016 are really exempt (one community expert's quote of HP's notes).
