Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's store page says the 7955e is a dynamic security printer: cartridges without HP circuitry may not work, now or after updates.[1]
- In May 2025 HP's support reply said dynamic security cannot be disabled because it is built into the firmware.[2]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- With HP+ on, the printer needs an HP account, internet and Original HP ink.[1]
- HP says HP+ stays on for the life of the printer once activated.[3]
- Instant Ink is optional. HP says it requires automatic firmware updates.[4]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no source naming a 7955e firmware version that blocks cartridges.[1]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Skip HP+ at setup if you want any chance with non-HP cartridges.[3] HP+ cannot be undone later.
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured cartridges do). HP says these are not affected by dynamic security.[4] Ask the seller if the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
What does not reliably work
- Turning dynamic security off: HP says it cannot be disabled.[2]
