UnknownNon-HP chips blocked by design; no firmware number confirmed
HP says the 9135e blocks cartridges with a non-HP chip by design, and with HP+ on it takes Original HP ink only. Compatible 936 cartridges are new and unproven. No named firmware block yet.
What to do now
- Skip HP+ at setup if you want any chance with non-HP ink.[4][2]HP says HP+ cannot be turned off once activated, and skipping it does not remove dynamic security.
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured or refilled cartridges do). HP says these are allowed.[1][5]Ask the seller whether the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 936 / 936e. Always accepted, including with HP+.
- Remanufactured 936 with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP. Supply is still thin.
- Account required
- Only with HP+
- Cartridges
- HP 936 / 936e EvoMore

Also applies to: OfficeJet Pro 9135 (non-'e', no HP+). Other 9110/9120/9130 series models (9122e, 9125e, 9128e, 9730e) use the same 936 cartridges.
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's US store page says the 9135e is a dynamic security printer: it is meant to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and periodic firmware updates will block cartridges that worked before. A reused HP chip allows refilled and remanufactured cartridges.[1]
- Swift Ink, an ink seller, lists the 9135e among printers using HP 936 and wrote in July 2026 (updated October 2026) that compatible 936 cartridges only have a chance in printers never enrolled in HP+ or Instant Ink, and results vary.[2]
- On HP's community forum in January 2025, a 9135e owner asked how to turn off the cartridge protection. A volunteer expert replied that every cartridge needs an embedded HP chip and there is no legal way to remove that requirement.[3]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- HP+ is optional and chosen at setup. With HP+ on, the printer needs an HP account, an ongoing internet connection and Original HP ink for the life of the printer.[1][4]
- Instant Ink is a separate, optional subscription, even if you turn HP+ on.[3]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no dated firmware number tied to a 9135e block. HP says periodic updates are used to keep the block working.[1]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Skip HP+ at setup if you want any chance with non-HP ink.[4][2] HP says HP+ cannot be turned off once activated, and skipping it does not remove dynamic security.
- Use cartridges that reuse an original HP chip (some remanufactured or refilled cartridges do). HP says these are allowed.[1][5] Ask the seller whether the chip is a reused HP chip before you buy.
What does not reliably work
- Turning off the chip check. HP's forum expert says there is no legal means to remove it, and Cartridge Security settings only lock cartridges to a printer against theft.[3][6]
- Turning HP+ off after it is on. HP says it stays on for the life of the printer.[4]
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 936 / 936e. Always accepted, including with HP+. Shop
- Remanufactured 936 with a reused HP chip. Check the chip is reused HP. Supply is still thin. Shop

What we could not verify
- Any owner report of a named firmware number blocking 936 cartridges on the 9135e.
- Whether compatible (new-chip) 936 cartridges work at all on a 9135e without HP+.
- How HP's renaming of the 9135e to the 9135 on its store changes HP+ for new units.
