UnknownNon-HP chips blocked by design; no firmware number confirmed
HP says the 8135e blocks cartridges with a non-HP chip by design, and with HP+ on it takes Original HP ink only. Compatible 923 cartridges are new and unproven. No named firmware block yet.
What to do now
- Skip HP+ at setup if you want any chance with non-HP ink.[4][2]HP+ cannot be undone later.
- Use remanufactured cartridges that reuse an original HP chip. HP says a reused HP chip is allowed.[1][5]Ask the seller whether the chip is a reused HP chip. Sellers say supply of empty 923 shells is still thin.
- Turn off automatic printer updates before installing non-HP cartridges, as sellers advise.[2]This comes from a seller, not HP, and won't help once a blocking update is installed.
- Account required
- Only with HP+
- Cartridges
- HP 923 / 923e EvoMore (US). Sold as HP 924 / 924e in Europe; region-coded, not interchangeable.
- Blocking firmware
- None reported

Also applies to: OfficeJet Pro 8135 (non-'e', no HP+). Other 8120 series models (8122e, 8125e, 8128e, 8138e, 8139e) use the same 923 cartridges.
Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- HP's US store page says the 8135e is a dynamic security printer: it is meant to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and periodic firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before.[1]
- Swift Ink, an ink seller, wrote in July 2026 (updated October 2026) that compatible 923 cartridges only have a chance in printers never enrolled in HP+ or Instant Ink, and results vary.[2]
- Castle Ink, another seller, says cartridges that reuse the original HP chip are the ones that work, and that HP 924/924e and 925/925e are regional versions a US printer will not take.[3]
HP account, HP+ and Instant Ink
- HP+ is offered at setup. With HP+ on, the printer needs an HP account, an internet connection and Original HP ink for the life of the printer.[1][4]
- HP says HP+ stays on once activated.[4]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no dated firmware number tied to an 8135e block. HP says periodic updates keep its chip checks working and can block cartridges that previously worked.[1][5]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Skip HP+ at setup if you want any chance with non-HP ink.[4][2] HP+ cannot be undone later.
- Use remanufactured cartridges that reuse an original HP chip. HP says a reused HP chip is allowed.[1][5] Ask the seller whether the chip is a reused HP chip. Sellers say supply of empty 923 shells is still thin.
- Turn off automatic printer updates before installing non-HP cartridges, as sellers advise.[2] This comes from a seller, not HP, and won't help once a blocking update is installed.
What does not reliably work
- Turning HP+ off after it is on. HP says it is embedded for the life of the printer.[4]
- Region-swapped cartridges (HP 924 or 925 in a US printer).[3]
What to buy instead
- Genuine HP 923 / 923e. Always accepted, including with HP+. Shop

What we could not verify
- Any owner report of a named firmware version blocking 923 cartridges on the 8135e.
- Whether compatible (new-chip) 923 cartridges work at all on an 8135e without HP+.
- A Reddit owner on Instant Ink reported an 8135e stuck asking for setup cartridges (comment dated June 2026); we could not confirm the cause, so it is not counted as a lockout.
