Third-party status
DisputedDisputed: Brother denies blocking; owners of other Brother models report rejections
Brother says its firmware updates do not block third-party toner, and says so on a support page that lists the MFC-L2820DW. We found no dated report of a block on this model, but owners of other Brother lasers report rejections after updates, so the status is Disputed.
What to do now
- Hold off on firmware updates while compatible toner is working, and wait for reports on new versions. An r/printers commenter said they kept a Brother printer off the internet to avoid updates and had no problems with aftermarket toner.[3][8]Brother recommends updating, and skipping updates also skips security fixes. That commenter used a different model.
What to buy instead
- Genuine Brother TN830 / TN830XL. Always accepted.
- Compatible TN830XL from a seller with a firmware return policy. Ask what happens if an update rejects it.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- Brother's TN830 support page, which lists the MFC-L2820DW, says Brother firmware updates do not block third-party ink and toner cartridges.[1]
- Brother recommends genuine supplies and says its limited warranty does not cover problems caused by third-party toner or drums.[2]
- In March 2025 Brother told Ars Technica its updates do not block third-party supplies; Ars said the opposing claims rest mostly on owner posts it could not confirm.[3]
- A compatible TN830 seller tells buyers to press Yes if the printer shows a 'Non Original Toner' prompt, and to restart on '445/446' or 'Cartridge Error'. That suggests the printer can detect non-genuine toner, though it is a seller's note, not a test.[4]
Brother account and subscriptions
- Brother's product page lists genuine TN830 toner for retail purchase; we found no statement that the MFC-L2820DW needs an account to print.[5]
- Brother's optional Refresh EZ Print subscription is different: if you cancel and your printer did not come with a refresh-ready cartridge, the subscription cartridge is deactivated and must be replaced.[5]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- Brother's user's guide for this model says to check for firmware periodically and that some functions may become unavailable without current firmware. Updates can be run from the printer's Settings > All Settings > Machine Info. > Firmware Update menu.[6]
- Brother's US download page for the MFC-L2820DW(XL) offers a Firmware Update Tool (version 1.28, released Oct 15, 2026) that pulls firmware from Brother's server. It lists no older firmware to roll back to.[7]
- On r/printers, an owner of a different model (MFC-L2750DW, TN760 toner) wrote in June 2026 that third-party toner stopped being recognized after a May 2026 update. We found no matching report for the MFC-L2820DW.[8]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Hold off on firmware updates while compatible toner is working, and wait for reports on new versions. An r/printers commenter said they kept a Brother printer off the internet to avoid updates and had no problems with aftermarket toner.[3][8] Brother recommends updating, and skipping updates also skips security fixes. That commenter used a different model.
What does not reliably work
- Rolling back firmware: Brother's download page offers only its update tool, not older firmware files.[7]
- Swapping in a partly used cartridge from another machine: Brother says the printer needs a brand-new cartridge to reset the toner status.[9]

What we could not verify
- Any dated owner report of a third-party TN830 block on the MFC-L2820DW itself.
- Which firmware version the MFC-L2820DW currently ships with, and what changed in recent updates.
- Whether the printer has a setting that turns off automatic firmware updates.
