Third-party status
WorksBottle-fed: no cartridge chip to block
Yes. The G6020 is refilled from GI-20 bottles, so there is no cartridge chip for firmware to reject. Canon recommends genuine ink; the risk is print quality, not a lockout.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- Canon lists GI-20 ink bottles for the G6000 series. The ink pours into built-in tanks; there are no chipped cartridges.[1]
- Tank & Toner, a review site, says MegaTank printers are bottle-fed with no cartridge chip to check.[3]
Canon account and subscriptions
- We found no Canon requirement for an account or subscription to print. Ink levels are tracked by the printer and driver.[2]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no source tying a G6020 firmware update to blocking third-party ink. With no cartridge chip, there is nothing for firmware to authenticate.[3]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use ink sold for GI-20 MegaTank printers, refill before a tank runs dry, and follow Canon's manual on the remaining-ink display.[2][1] Running a tank dry can damage the print head.
What does not reliably work
- There is no chip to reset or swap. Problems with third-party bottle ink are about ink quality, not firmware.[3]

What we could not verify
- Long-term print-head wear with third-party bottle ink.
- Whether Canon's warranty would cover damage when third-party ink was used.
- Any dated G6020 owner report on current firmware.
