Third-party status
WorksBottle-fed: no cartridge chip to block
Yes. The ET-8550 is filled from 552 bottles, so there is no cartridge chip for firmware to reject. The real trade-offs are photo quality, fade resistance, and Epson's warranty, which won't cover damage caused by third-party ink.
What to do now
- Use ink sold for 552 EcoTank printers, fill the right color carefully, and top up before a tank drops below the lower line.[4][8]Ink quality varies between sellers, and a wrong-color fill is hard to undo.
- Some owners convert the ET-8550 to all-pigment ink for matte, water-resistant prints. Ink sellers say this works best on a brand-new printer or after all the original dye ink is removed.[7][8]Not an Epson-supported setup; any resulting damage is outside the warranty.
What to buy instead
- Genuine Epson 552 bottles. The safe default for photo work, and keyed to fit each tank.
- Compatible 552 bottles. Cheaper. Pick a seller with a return policy and an ICC profile.

Third-party and remanufactured cartridges
- Epson says its cartridge printers are designed for Epson cartridges only, and that such restrictions can be avoided with cartridge-free EcoTank printers.[1]
- Epson lists six 552 bottles for the ET-8550 and ET-8500: Black, Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Gray.[2][3]
- Third-party sellers sell compatible 552 bottles and all-pigment conversion kits for the ET-8550, and r/printers owners report running Epson and aftermarket dye inks.[6][7]
Epson account and subscriptions
- We found no Epson requirement for an account or subscription to print; Epson's product page sells it as a one-time purchase with replacement bottles.[2]
Firmware that blocked cartridges
- We found no source tying an ET-8550 firmware update to blocking third-party ink. Epson's firmware warning about third-party ink is aimed at its cartridge printers.[1]
To see your version, print a printer status report or open the printer's web page. Compare it with the firmware list.
Workarounds that sources back up
- Use ink sold for 552 EcoTank printers, fill the right color carefully, and top up before a tank drops below the lower line.[4][8] Ink quality varies between sellers, and a wrong-color fill is hard to undo.
- Some owners convert the ET-8550 to all-pigment ink for matte, water-resistant prints. Ink sellers say this works best on a brand-new printer or after all the original dye ink is removed.[7][8] Not an Epson-supported setup; any resulting damage is outside the warranty.
What does not reliably work
- Counting on the warranty: Epson says its warranties do not extend to damage caused by third-party ink or ink not designed for the printer.[4][5]
- Expecting identical photo results: an r/Epson owner who switched to third-party Photo Black said the quality drop was visible side by side and went back to Epson ink.[6]

What we could not verify
- Long-term print-head wear on the ET-8550 with third-party dye or pigment ink.
- Lightfastness of specific third-party 552 inks compared with Epson's.
- How Epson handles a warranty claim when third-party ink was used but not shown to cause the fault.
